  • Research summary

We will be conducting focus groups in two GP practices in South Manchester and two GP practices in Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). Each focus group will consist of 6-10 participants. There will be two focus groups with senior citizens (aged 70+ living in their own home), two with health and social care professionals, and two with informal carers (volunteers, friends or family). In total there will be six focus groups per GP practice.
We will be exploring the groups' views on what is needed for active and healthy ageing. The groups will be asked to discuss senior citizens' current needs and expectations and their needs and expectations for the future in relation to active and healthy ageing.
The focus group discussions will be transcribed and analysed for qualitative themes.
We will also be interviewing three policymakers in each CCG to discuss the following topics:
    • Delay fragility
    • Prevent falls
    • Address issues associated with polypharmacy (management of multiple medications by a patient)

This is a multi-centre project taking place in Manchester, Pallini (Greece), Rijeka (Croatia), Valencia (Spain), and Rotterdam (The Netherlands) concurrently.
Each partner is seeking ethical approval in their own countries.

The findings of the focus groups and semi-structured interviews will be used as the basis for the design of a preventative integrated health and social care intervention entitled the 'UHCE Toolkit', which would be trialled in a separate study
