Research summary
Objectives and Setting: The proposed study builds on the teams prior work in ageing populations with long term conditions. The aim is to improve level of uptake of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) for elderly, frail and hard-to-reach patients with cardiac disease. The current level of uptake is 50%, with the NHS Long Term plan to attain 85% uptake by 2025. The lack of participation in the intervention, which has a 26% reduced risk of cardiovascular mortality and 18% reduction of readmission, will have a direct influence on the readmission rates, further increasing long term burden on the NHS, and moreover increase mortality number.
The study will identify barriers and facilitators to engaging in CR and contribute to a planned cardiac services improvement in a large NHS hospital. Findings will also be used to inform the design of a future national clinical trial to develop appropriately adapted and accessible CR interventions to promote uptakeMethod: The study will involve semi-structured interviews with 15-20 patients recruited from the Cardiothoracic Centre at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, identifying barriers and facilitators to engaging in CR, and engaging with physical activity generally. Patients’ preferences regarding physical activity, modes of delivery and potential adaptations will also be explored. Interviews will be carried out either online or face to face, according to the patient's preference. Results will be used to inform the development of a larger study.
