Research summary
Women who have taken part in a complex intervention (diet and physical activity)randomised controlled trial to improve outcome in obese pregnancy (the UPBEAT Trial) will be asked to attend with the child from the index pregnancy (aged 3-4 years). In order to address the hypothesis that maternal obesity during pregnancy directly influences the risk of obesity and the health of the child and that the intervention in pregnancy may reduce the risk of obesity in the child. Information will be collected from the woman and her child including body fat mass, health, diet, eating habits and physical activity. Blood and urine samples will be taken from all mothers and the children when consent is provided. In sub-groups of children additional tests for cognitive function will be undertaken. Comparisons will be made bwtween chidren from women in both arms of the trial
