  • Data collection arrangements

The University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry Research Tissue Bank has been set up to collect and store specific research samples from adult patients attending Birmingham Dental Hospital.

The Dentistry Research Tissue Bank (DRTB) provides a Patient Information Sheet and Informed Consent Form for patients to review and sign. Fresh research samples to be taken include Blood, Saliva, Plaque, and Gingival Crevicular Fluid. These are then frozen and stored in a Human Tissue Authority approved Biorepository within the School of Dentistry. Waste samples to be collected include tissue and failed biomaterials, such as dental implants.

Some data will be collected and stored (anonymously) with the samples. This will include some demographic information (gender, age, and ethnicity) as well as diagnosis, medical history, and current medications provided from the care record.

  • Research programme

The DRTB supports both clinical and academic researchers across the School of Dentistry to investigate the mechanisms of oral disease. Oral infections and inflammatory diseases are the most common human diseases worldwide and cause significant morbidity, impacting upon general health, wellbeing and mortality rates. The long term aim of all our research projects is to contribute to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to help people with diseases affecting the oral region. A particular research strength is inflammatory conditions that affect the mouth and the samples donated are helping to further important research into these diseases. Our research is making significant inroads into understanding their pathobiology and translating this into novel treatments that benefit patients.
