  • Data collection arrangements

UCLH has become a fully digital hospital in April 2019. All the information that is routinely captured by UCLH about patients and the care they receive are now recorded in our electronic health record system, creating a complete record for our patients’ when they are at UCLH.

We recognise that this same information has immense value to researchers both within UCLH and UCL to derive new insights and knowledge for patient and public benefit. We also understand from patients and our staff that they would appreciate greater awareness of kind of research that their data is being used for and to be actively involved in shaping the direction of research at UCLH.

The new data requesting process what we have created puts patients and staff right at the centre of influencing and approving data-only research projects at UCLH. It also aims make the process faster and more transparent, and ensure that researchers receive the support that they need to maximise the chance of delivering on the aims of their projects.

Data under this process will be anonymous and for [projects that UCLH and UCL are responsible for. This will sometimes involve collaborations with other universities, NHS institutions and industrial partners.

  • Research programme

As this is a requesting process for all data-only studies, the kinds of research this enables reflects breadth of clinical service we provide at UCLH and the disease areas that are directly relevant to our patients and staff. The potential benefits from the research are broad. Examples include :- 1) Better ways of running the hospital and designing the clinical service we provide. 2) New insights into existing diseases and identifying criteria for new diseases. 3) Development of new digital tools to make patient care safer and more personalised. These could include tools created by the application of machine learning. We also aim for the outputs of research to be applicable to patients in other healthcare organisations and to lead to further research.
