  • Research summary

Lower back, knee and shoulder pain are the three most common musculoskeletal pain conditions that present in primary care. In many situations thee is considerable uncertainty regarding diagnosis. Diagnostic imaging is increasingly being used across the NHS, particularly where uncertainty exists. In such circumstances, patients often perceive scan results to provide definitive understanding.

Despite the use of diagnostic imaging increasing, there does not appear to be a difference in clinical outcome (improved pain or function) between those that undergo a scan or x-ray, and those that do not. There are problems associated with misuse of diagnostic imaging including exposure to radiation, negative beliefs, reduced prognosis as well as an economic cost.

The increasing use of diagnostic imaging does not appear to be due to recommendations from clinical guidelines. This study will help understand the reasons behind use of diagnostic imaging from both a patient and clinician perspective.
