Research summary
The purpose of the study is to find out about people’s rehabilitation needs when they are diagnosed with lung cancer and how that affects their everyday lives. We would like to find out which of those needs people feel they have or have not had help with. We would also like to know what people feel would help them to manage from day to day.
Allied Health Professions are rehabilitation specialists. They may think that they know what patients need to help them most. It is important to know what patients want so that services can be developed in the best way to meet their personal needs.
The word “rehabilitation“ can be confusing to patients as they might think that it is about getting better when they have a life-threatening illness. Health professionals may also be unsure about the how rehabilitation can help those with life-threatening illnesses. Previous studies have shown that supportive and palliative rehabilitation can be very helpful but that rehabilitation specialists are not part of multidisciplinary team meetings. Doctors and nurses may not understand the importance of rehabilitation.
In this study we want to find out what patients know about rehabilitation and what their needs are. These ideas and experiences will be used to plan a further study where the rehabilitation treatment is adapted and we will look to see if this improves how patients manage to do what they want to do.
