  • Research summary

This study is being conducted as part of an ARC clinical fellowship funded by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research). It follows from a piece of research which found that older adults with a diagnosis of personality disorder were prescribed more medication during their lifetime than older adults with different mental health diagnoses.
The study aims to better understand the medicines older people with personality disorder take and what the medicines mean to them, and how they may feel about taking fewer. It is qualitative in nature, recruiting 4-6 participants for interview to discuss their prescribed medication. The interviews will take approximately 60 minutes and will take place at a location of the participant's choosing. The participants will be open to the older adults' mental health community team and will be approached by a mental health clinician working with them as to whether they wish to take part.
The interviews will be transcribed and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis to look for themes of meanings to participants.
