    Research Summary

As a long-running study, Understanding Society is ideally placed to collect information about the effects of COVID-19 on the lives of people in the UK. We have collected annual information from our participants for over ten years and we will continue to invite them to annual interviews into the future. This means that Understanding Society is the perfect instrument to see how different groups of people are affected by the coronavirus pandemic and social restrictions now and in the future. Since April 2020, therefore, participants in the study have been invited to complete a regular web survey; 17,000 people took part in the first wave and six waves of data are available at the UK Data Service (UKDS). The survey is providing significant insights into people’s experiences, for example it has been used in the SAGE report on ethnic minorities and vaccine hesitancy, Public Health England’s mental health monitor and Public Health Scotland’s evaluation of shielding.

Understanding Society is a partner in the Longitudinal Health and Wealth National Core Study (LH&W NCS) (initiated by Sir Patrick Vallance), which aims to generate greater understanding of risk factors related to COVID-19 outcomes and both short- and long-term health and wider outcomes related to COVID-19 and interventions. To provide better data on COVID-19 infections and outcomes, in the March 2021 web survey, and by letter for those without internet, we will ask participants to undertake an antibody test and for their consent to link to their NHS records. For those who consent to receiving an antibody kit, this would be sent to them, and if they return it, their results will be fed back. The antibody results will be accessible, with the COVID-19 survey data, in the UKDS. Linked NHS data will be made available via one or more secure access platforms.

In March 2021 we additionally asked participants to provide a blood sample so that we could test for COVID-19 antigens and to consent to link to their NHS data.
