Research summary
This study will be investigating whether there are any differences between offenders and non-offenders with intellectual disabilities in terms of their social-moral awareness (understanding of right and wrong). This study will also check whether any differences are related to intellectual functioning (IQ), age and theory of mind abilities (understanding that other people have different thoughts to their own).
This study will assess social-moral awareness using The Social-Moral Awareness Test (SMAT). This test has been developed specifically for people with intellectual disabilities. It aims to understand whether individuals have an awareness of how to behave in common situations.
Understanding more about moral awareness and theory of mind in people with intellectual disabilities will help practitioners to provide better support to people who can be vulnerable in the community. It may also help to think of ways to prevent people from re-offending
