  • Research summary

Total hip and total knee replacements are some of the most common and most successful operations done on the National Health Service in England. They have in the past required patients to stay in hospital for a few nights to recover.

Safely performing day-case surgery is a way of easing pressure on hospitals. This is because it avoids an overnight stay and allows patients to recover in their own home. This is likely to be more efficient and better for the environment because it uses less resources. It also allows more patients to be treated quickly for their condition especially with the current waiting list length.

We want to know what it is like for patients who go home on the day of surgery following their hip or knee replacement. We hope that this will tell us how to improve the process for patients in the future across the country.

We will perform the study through hospitals that do a lot of same-day discharge joint replacement surgery. Before or after surgery the doctor will ask their patient if they would be happy to be interviewed. Patients will be given a leaflet explaining the study. This will have an email address and phone number to contact the lead researcher if they would like to take part.

Willing patients will be interviewed over a video call or phone call once they have been discharged home for at least two week s. Each patient will be asked about their experience of having same-day discharge surgery. The interviews will be recorded and written up word for word. The research team will analyse the interviews and use the insights provided to improve patient’s experiences in the future.
