  • Research summary

What do we want to do?: In Type 1 diabetes (T1D), blood glucose levels rise and can cause damage because of a lack of insulin. People with T1D have to inject insulin several times daily and they need to measure their blood glucose by fingerprick tests frequently to guide insulin doses. Diabetes technology such as insulin pumps to deliver insulin and real time continuous glucose sensors (rtCGM) to measure blood glucose can help make self- management of diabetes easier and better. We want to understand why children/ young people (CYP) with T1D from black and ethnic minority groups and those living in deprived areas are less likely than other CYP to be using diabetes technology.
Why we are doing this: A large annual diabetes national survey in England and Wales (National Paediatric Diabetes Audit 2021) has shown a widening year-on-year gap for the past 6 years in use of diabetes technology between CYP from different ethnic backgrounds and between those living in the most and least deprived areas.
How we will do it: To do this, we will interview CYP and their families. We will use interview findings and feedback to provide valuable information on what is happening across all areas of the country and reasons for this. We will then reconvene our consultation groups to produce recommendations to help ensure that all CYP given fair and equal access to diabetes technology in the future.
How are people with diabetes and the public involved? We will involve people and families living with diabetes by working with charities that represent them such as Diabetes UK, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Egality, Diabetes Africa and Royal College of Paediatrics. These groups will be involved in helping us develop and deliver all stages of the study.
