  • Research summary

Up to 80% of people with schizophrenia have problems sleeping. For these people, sleep problems are often related to feeling worse, not thinking clearly and not enjoying life. Sleep problems have also been associated with relapse, help seeking and suicidal thoughts in people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. This suggests that sleep problems may be upsetting for some people with this diagnosis and may also make their symptoms worse.

Schizophrenia usually starts in adolescence. Four out of five people will relapse within 5 years of first becoming ill. It is therefore important that we understand how sleep might be related to how schizophrenia starts and people feeling worse. Poor sleep is known to have an effect on people with long-term schizophrenia. However we don’t know much about how sleep problems affect people in the early stages of the illness.

The U-SLEEP study aims to investigate the subjective experience of sleep disturbance in first-episode psychosis. We will ask people questions about their sleep in the form of a one-to-one interview. Questions will be about sleep history, how people feel sleep relates to symptoms and how sleep affects everyday life.
