Research summary
Research has demonstrated that men with prostate cancer that undertake a moderate level of exercise can improve their symptoms and reduce health risks as a consequence of cancer treatment. Most men are unaware what exercise or dietary advice to follow after their cancer treatment. The aim of this research is to test a pharmacy-led intervention to improve the physical health of men with prostate cancer.
As a result of our phase 1 work we have developed an algorithm that uses the results of comprehensive health and fitness tests to provide a personalised lifestyle prescription for men with prostate cancer. The combination of health and fitness tests have been purposefully selected for use in a high street pharmacy setting. Eight community pharmacy teams who currently run NHS health checks (and are part of the Healthy Living Pharmacy initiative) have been trained to introduce this assessment and lifestyle prescription service.
Men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer within the past three years, have completed surgery or radiotherapy at least three months ago and have a BMI of 25 or over; and/or on androgen deprivation therapy; and/or diagnosed with hypertension will be invited to take part.
This study will pilot the service in Portsmouth and involves 144 men. Each man will be invited to go to a participating pharmacy of their choice for a comprehensive assessment. They will immediately receive the results of this assessment and be given a personalised lifestyle prescription and resource pack. The pharmacist will follow up with 2 phone calls and then the man will undergo repeat assessments 12 weeks later. The University of Surrey team will assess participant’s physical activity, eating behaviour, quality of life and level of activation before the pharmacy assessment. These assessments will be repeated three and six months later.REC name
