Research summary
This study aims to identify the triggers of both vocal cord dysfunction and asthma in patients attending the chest clinic at Lancashire Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust or University Hospital of South Manchester Foundation Trust.
Patients attending the clinics, with a diagnosis of either vocal cord dysfunction or asthma, will receive an information leaflet regarding the study and what it involves. This information leaflet will be given to them when they arrive at the clinic for their outpatient appointment. A member of the clinical team will ask each potential participant if they have understood the information and would be interested to take part. If so, they will be directed after their appointment to speak to a member of the study team, who will discuss the study in detail, obtain verbal and written consent, and the data will be collected in the same visit.
A member of the study team will administer four questionnaires:
- Triggers of breathlessness and
- Medical Research Council Breathlessness Score and
- St George's Respiratory Questionnaire and
- Vocal Cord Dysfunction Questionnaire (VCDQ) or
- Asthma Control QuestionnaireThe questionnaires will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Following this, the patient's involvement in the study is completed.
