Research summary
Calcium deposition within the arterial wall and in atherosclerotic plaques contributes to the narrowing and blockage of arteries especially in patients with diabetes mellitus. The effectiveness and durability of therapeutic interventions in peripheral vascular disease and coronary artery disease is significantly affected by the amount of calcium deposition. Should there be a mechanism to remove this deposition promptly the native arteries may well be reused in the body to improve the circulation to the affected areas,if not achieving improved technical results following endovascular interventions.
The current research is to design a mechanism to decalcify segments of arteries removed from amputated limbs. Specimens removed from the arteries during surgery to clear the blocked arteries may also be used.REC name
