Experiences of Treatment Responders in the Addiction Recovery Clinic Trial

Drug abuse is a large scale problem nationally and also to the individual; the British Medical Association estimate an approximate spenditure of £1.2 billion a year on drug strategies. For the individual, drug abuse impacts on education, employment, social functioning and mental health.
This study investigates the experiences of patients who took part in a trial named the Addiction Recovery Clinic (ARC) at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Lambeth sites. This randomised control trial compared the delivery of opiate substitution therapy (treatment as usual), against an individualised psychological intervention package named Personalised Behavioural Intervention, on the level of drug usage in patients with opiate and cocaine addiction. The quantitative results of the ARC study may prove promising, however they are limited in their capacity to describe the subjective experiences of the clients. This study investigates patient experiences of those who “responded” to treatment by reducing their level of drug use and asks questions to elicit information on what worked within the treatment.
In order to find out this information, this study will use qualitative methods to gain a narrative of the patients’ experiences. A semi-structured interview will be used with a set of open questions and pre-planned prompts. This will take place in a single one to two hour session which will be recorded. All recordings and confidential data will be handled in accordance with data handling policies. The narratives will be transcribed and analysed using a qualitative method called interpretative phenomenological analysis, which allows the researcher to deduce themes in the data based on subjective experience. The participants will be invited to check the results for precision and for identifying information in the narrative. Anonymity will further be protected by use of a pseudonym. Results will be disseminated accordingly.
