  • Research summary

Research has repeatedly shown that there is a strong relationship between experiencing trauma in childhood and being diagnosed with emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) in adulthood. Studies have also found that people with personality difficulties often experience unfair treatment in mental health services and wider society. Policies in the UK have highlighted the need to improve the mental health care of these individuals. A ‘trauma-informed care’ approach considers the past trauma people may have experienced by supporting them to heal and feel safe and by reducing harm.
In response to this, the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYT) has recently developed a Trauma Informed Personality Disorder (TIPD) pathway. This ‘pathway’ will provide specialist trauma-informed mental health care and treatments to people with a diagnosis of EUPD or similar personality difficulties. The aim of the present study is to carry out qualitative interviews to explore the individual experiences of a group of people who have receive this trauma-informed care approach on the TIPD pathway at SWYT. We will use the study findings to further develop our TIPD pathway and make sure it is meeting the needs of the people it was designed for.
