Research summary
Unconscious processes underpin psychoanalytic theories of psychopathology however there is limited quantitative empirical evidence exploring the role of these processes in clinical studies of mental health service users. This research intends to examine the one way of conceptualizing and measuring individual variation of unconscious processes in relation to mental health service users experiencing inter-personal difficulties (often termed borderline personality disorder within psychiatry). Additionally, this research will examine the relationship between unconscious processes and an existing model of interpersonal difficulties known as mentalization theory. The findings will contribute to the literature in terms of how interpersonal difficulties are understood and treated.
