Research summary
The study aimed to explore transition to adult services from the perspective of young people with high functioning autism spectrum disorders and their families. This would be done by interviewing eight young people aged 14-18 and a parent/person with parental responsibility in order to understand transition from their perspective. The interviews would explore what support the young person currently received, their expectations of transition to adulthood including any concerns and the impact of transition on family life. The interviews would last up to an hour and be audio recorded to allow them to be transcribed verbatim. The transcripts would then be analysed qualitatively using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), a method of qualitative analyses commonly used in this kind of research. Analyses using IPA would allow for a detailed understanding of each participant’s experience and understanding of transition, and any similarities and discrepancies between participants and between young people and their families.
