  • Research summary

    Transition in the context of clinical care in the NHS, refers to the process of moving from paediatric to adult health care services. For young people attending the asthma clinics at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital this occurs at the age of 16, with their care transferring to a consultant respiratory physician at Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
    Despite a reasonably large volume of literature relating to the transition process for adolescents with a variety of medical conditions, there is extremely limited research relating specifically to young people with asthma.
    The broad aim of this qualitative study is to explore the experiences of young people transitioning from paediatric to adult asthma services in Liverpool.
    Specific objectives are;
    • To describe the personal experiences of young people with asthma, transitioning from paediatric to adult care
    • To identify issues relating to the timing of the process
    • To identify positive aspects of the process
    • To explore differences between the paediatric and adult clinic environments
    • To understand the clinic visit priorities for young people and their families
    • To identify aspects of the transition process which could be improved
    The data collection period will run for 10 weeks (April-July 2017) and include individual semi-structured interviews and group discussions involving young people who have recently transitioned from the asthma clinic at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to the adult services at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. In addition, we will conduct individual interviews with parents/carers and relevant health professionals.
    Data will be analysed using the Framework Method with identification of recurrent themes and sub-themes to describe and explain the key issues experienced by young people with asthma relating to the transition process.
    An increased understanding of the young person’s perspective, with additional information from key informants, will highlight areas for development and hopefully improve the transition process for future families.
