Research summary
Lithium is a gold-standard treatment for bipolar disorder but it can be associated with important long-term side-effects. There is currently no reliable method for accurately predicting which patients will have a favourable response. In this study, we will recruit patients with bipolar disorder from a variety of sources and assess whether genetic and non-genetic factors (specifically, genetic loading for mood instability and previous experience of adverse childhood events) are potentially useful for predicting response to lithium. A broader aim will be to gather pilot data which will inform the future development of a larger UK-wide study focussed on developing stratified medicine approaches to the treatment of Bipolar Disorder.
We aim to recruit a total of 200 participant. The participants will attend a one off study visit in which two structured questionnaires will be completed and a blood sample taken.REC name
