Research summary
This study comprises two cohorts. Cohort 1 study will test and compare new methods of detecting bacteria and quantifying bacteria in blood, using blood samples donated by healthy volunteers.
Cohort 2 will use methods (chosen based on findings from cohort 1) to test blood samples taken during the illness of patients who are found to have the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus in their blood, a condition called Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteraemia (SAB). The information from these tests will be combined with other information from the patients' medical records to model the disease, seeing if it is possible to predict how a particular patient's illness progresses.
