Research summary
Following completion of treatment for gynaecological cancer the standard approach is for patients to be seen in the hospital clinic for routine check-ups. Many of these visits may be unnecessary or unhelpful. We plan to conduct a feasibility study of an optimised follow-up care by providing the patients with an initial educational package customised to the patients’ diagnosis and treatment, followed by regular telephone review led by a clinical nurse specialist which will include structured needs assessments. A randomised feasibility study will be undertaken in three hospitals in North Wales to compare this new approach with standard care. Fifty patients will be recruited into the study with 25 patients randomly allocated to the standard care group and 25 patients to the nurse-led telephone care group. This study will assess the number of patients eligible to take part and their willingness to be randomised. It will assess the acceptability of the new approach and the ability to collect follow-up clinical data as well as psychological and health economic data.
