Research summary
Burns are a serious public health problem. Children, particularly those aged less than five years, are at the highest risk and account for half the number of childhood burn accidents. Most cases are accidental and are potentially preventable. Prompt and adequate first aid when applied correctly has been shown to play an important role in burn outcome. Parents' and caregivers' knowledge of burns prevention and first aid is especially important in this regard. This project seeks to address the knowledge gap around childhood thermal injury prevention and first aid knowledge in parents and carers of children under the age of five years. This will be done with the aid of a targeted multimedia-based educational intervention "TOO HOT TO HANDLE!" This intervention will benefit parents and carers of young children by improving their knowledge of burns prevention and first aid, thus reducing the risk of future burns.
