  • Research summary

This is a multiple systematic case study aimed at implementing the self-report and observation measures recently developed from two previous studies. The purpose of the study is to determine if these two forms are reliable and valid measures of personal agency with a new sample of hospice patients. Also, it would be useful to discover whether Emotion-Focused Therapy can help hospice patients increase their sense of personal agency over their situation/experiences.

This study will also be carried out in St. Andrew’s Hospice. Four patients (2 each from outpatient/inpatient units) will each be asked to fill out recently developed self-report form either by themselves or with assistance of the investigator, using pen and paper. On the same day, recently developed observation forms will be filled out, independently, using pen and paper, by the researcher and nurses from Out/In-patient Units. For outpatients, measures will be filled out once a week over 6 weeks; for inpatients, reports will be carried out 6 times, over a 1-to-2-week period, as appropriate.
On that same day, each outpatient will be offered a counselling session(each lasting 30 minutes) of Emotion-Focused Therapy, (over 6 weeks and on the day they attend outpatient unit) in a room in the outpatient unit.

Inpatients will also be offered a counselling session of Emotion-Focused Therapy (each lasting about 15 minutes), on the day after they fill out the self-report, as appropriate, in the inpatient unit.

Analysis: This phase will indicate whether (a)the recently developed self-report /observation forms meet the criteria of construct validity, stability and consistency and so useful and helpful as reliable and valid measures for assessing personal agency in hospice patients; (b) can help patients to experience themselves as having a greater sense of control, giving rise to useful, helpful action that can help them to live with a life-limiting illness.
