Research summary
The aim is to investigate if an association exists between hand grip strength and shoulder dysfunction in patients with pathology of the shoulder. It is an observational study. This means that data is collected from a population at one point in time.
A sample of 75 male patients with shoulder pathology that attend the Orthopaedic Shoulder Clinic at Dewsbury and District Hospital will be used.
Participants will act as there own control. The average of 3 maximal grip strength forces will be recorded for both arms. Information from a validated shoulder questionnaire and the Pain Self Efficacy Questionnaire will also be collected along with information regarding the age of the participants, length of history of symptoms and sites of pain. The collection of data from each participant will take approximately 20 minutes in total.Understanding how hand grip is affected in patients with shoulder pathology may yield insight into the effects of shoulder symptoms on the distal arm. Quantifying if a relationship exists between grip strength and shoulder pathology may indicate a role for gripping tasks in the rehabilitation of people with shoulder pathology.
