Research summary
Modernising and expanding the research nurse role requires suitable development of the workforce. To aid the mapping of career progression the Royal College of Nursing developed a competency framework (Gelling, 2008). This framework is a nationally recognised tool used by all UK Clinical Research Networks as part of the National Institute for Health Research. As there is no method available for comparison a self-report questionnaire based on the Competency Framework for Clinical Research Nurses (RCN, 2011) will be used to assess the role competencies (skills, behaviours, knowledge and understanding) of the clinical research nurses that work in a specialist cancer hospital.
