Research summary
The underlying causes of some types of liver disease are not well known. We suspect that long term infection by a difficult to grow germ called mycobacterium may be involved. In this study we wish to take samples from patients and use new techniques to see if we can culture the mycobacterium germ from them. Being able to show the presence of germs like these and linking them with disease, could help doctors prescribe more effective types of medicine.
