Research summary
Current routine methods to survey for Tuberculosis in young children are inadequate. In many cases it is really difficult to obtain a good sample, partially because a respiratory sample is the usual choice and obtaining such can be traumatic and inconsistent and partly because the amount of target bacteria causing the disease is often very low in children. This study will provide critical evidence that a new approach using novel TiKa system has good potential to be able to reliably survey and diagnostically inform on non-invasive samples (faeces) obtained from patients with suspected or diagnosed tuberculosis. To do this we will evaluate the efficacy of a novel system (TiKa) to culture Mycobacterium tuberculosis from paediatric faecal samples. We will compare the efficacy of isolation and detection alongside a conventional method and aim to show that this sampling approach will offer a novel but accurate method for helping clinicians diagnose and confirm their clinical diagnosis of Tuberculosis in the young.
