Research summary
The incidence of thyroid cancer is linked to radio-iodine exposure. However, the relationship is poorly understood (especially at low levels of exposure) and more research into the subject is needed.
The population of West and North Cumbria have historically received a greater than average exposure to radio-iodine, due to the Sellafield nuclear facility, and the Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986.
This study will aim to contribute to the knowledge base on the subject, using data collected by North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust in the process of treating patients.
