Research summary
In the UK 5700 patients a year undergo major lung surgery (MLS) to remove whole or part of the lung to cure lung cancer. Complications after MLS such as pneumonia and respiratory distress commonly lead to increased risk of death, longer hospital stay and readmissions. Risk factors for developing complications are older age, smoking and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Evidence published in abdominal surgery relating to carbohydrate loading pre surgery and nutritional support post-surgery have shown improvement in patient symptoms, function and quality of life, reduction in complications and enhanced recovery after COPD exacerbations. Currently MLS are not routinely offered any nutritional intervention (NI).
The study aim is to assess the feasibility of carrying out a randomised controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of a NI of preoperative carbohydrate-loading drinks and early postoperative nutritional supplement drinks compared to receiving an equivalent volume of water in enhancing recovery after MLS.REC name
