Research summary
The ThinkCancer! feasibility study is part of a programme of research called the Wales Interventions and Cancer Knowledge about Early Diagnosis (WICKED). The overall aims of the WICKED Programme are to improve the quality and consistency of primary care approaches in order to improve timely diagnosis of cancer. The WICKED programme is divided into five Work Packages (WPs). ThinkCancer! comprises WP4 of the WICKED programme. The intervention is a complex behaviour change intervention aimed at general medical practice teams. The target behaviour the intervention aims to achieve is to get GPs (within the context of their broader practice systems) thinking of and acting on clinical presentations that could be cancer. The target behaviour was identified as part of the work conducted in Work Packages 1 and 2, and the intervention developed as part of Work Package 3.
The ThinkCancer! intervention is a GP practice-based workshop consisting of themed sessions for both clinical and non-clinical staff, the co-production of a Cancer Safety Netting Plan (CSNP) and the appointment of a Cancer Safety Netting Champion (CSNC). The workshop aims to raise awareness and increase knowledge around current cancer diagnosis guidance and will be delivered over half a day during GP protected time in the form of face-to-face educational sessions. Sessions will consist of interactive activities exploring existing processes within practices and developing plans for change to implement each component. The findings from the feasibility study will inform the planning phase for a future definitive trial (WP5).
