  • Research summary

Parenting interventions help parents learn and practise strategies that are effective in preventing and treating childhood behaviour problems. We know that many types of interventions work even better when they are delivered in groups, because of certain ‘Therapeutic Factors’ (TFs), such as the positive effects of being around supportive people with shared experiences. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, parenting groups have also been delivered virtually using video calls. However, we don’t know how parents experience group TFs when they are in groups that are online and not face-to-face.

This study will interview parents who have taken part in a face-to-face or virtual parenting group – and ask about 1) parents’ perspectives of TFs; (2) how TFs are expressed and operate in face-to-face and virtual group parenting interventions; and (3) whether there are any unique characteristics that operate in each of these environments.

Interviews will be conducted online over Microsoft Teams, using a qualitative interview methodology using a Topic Guide to ask about parents' experiences. Open ended questions will allow for parents to provide personalised responses, with opportunity to provide further information that may not have been asked at the end. The interviews will last between 60-90 minutes.
