Research summary
The study will compare people (n =30) who have had a significant length (more than 20 cms) of their terminal ileum (part of the bowel next to the colon), essential for absorbing vitamin B12, surgically removed as part of an operation to remove the colon cancer. These participants will have their vitamin B12 status measured by measuring their blood vitamin B12 and some associated compounds (homocysteine and methylmalonic acid). A control group (n=30) of a similar age, who are healthy and have not undergone colon surgery for cancer will be invited to provide a blood sample and have their vitamin B12 status tested like the patient group. This will study will show if this surgery can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency and how this possible deficiency compares to the status in the local population.
