Research summary
Each year approximately 100,000 people with hip osteoarthritis in the United Kingdom undergo an operation to receive a new artificial hip (‘total hip replacement’). Before a patient has a total hip replacement, a surgeon decides which type of artificial hip, known as a ‘hip implant’, to use. There are different kinds, made of different materials. Currently, we do not know enough about what kind of information patients want to know about their new artificial hip, or how involved they want to be in the decision-making about the choice of new artificial hip they are given. The ‘understanding artificial hips interview study’ (funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research) will undertake in-depth interviews to explore patients’ experiences, preferences and information needs in relation to artificial hip implant choice. We will identify whether and how patients wish to be involved in decision-making about their new hip implant and what sort of information they require to support their involvement. We will also ask for patients’ views on a large clinical trial that will identify which type of artificial hip implant is best for people aged under 70 who need to have a total hip replacement due to osteoarthritis. Findings from the in-depth interview study will be used in future to support the development of information materials for patients who desire more information about artificial hip implants used in total hip replacement and/or who wish to be involved in decision-making about implant choice. Approximately 30 people aged from 40 to 69 will take part in a one-off telephone interview for this study, half of whom will be on a waiting list to receive a Total Hip Replacement, and half who will have already experienced a Total Hip Replacement. Four UK orthopaedic centres will identify and invite potential participants to the study.
