Research summary
The 2019 novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is an increasingly alarming threat globally. The main symptoms of Covid-19 are respiratory with secondary complications of pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome often requiring ventilation and intensive care support. Most studies have reported a wide range of mortality and morbidity for patients less than 65 years of age who have been admitted to hospital. However, there are no studies that have reported the outcomes in frail older people who are at risk of needing up to 40% of critical care input over the next 6 to 12 months according to recent modelling of the disease progression and transmission. This study will help characterise the course of Covid-19 in older patients, and its impact on mortality and morbidity outcomes, functional recovery and hospital resource utilisation. Information obtained from this study will provide invaluable insight and have a significant impact on key decision making in the coming months, and will help shape policies around the management of Covid-19 in frail older patients.
