Research summary
The Study of Eczema and Asthma To Observe the influence of Nutrition (SEATON Study) was designed to answer the question ’does maternal diet during pregnancy affect asthma outcome in childhood?’. Between 1997 and 1999, 2000 pregnant mothers were recruited. Follow-up of the cohort was undertaken at ages 1, 2, 5 and 10 years of age.
Here we seek approval to undertake the 15 year assessment of the cohort. We have already approached the cohort and asked a number of questions relevant to the design of this assessment, eg how would participants like us to contact them?, where would they like assessments to take place?, do they expect renumeration for their time and if so how much?.
In this study we will replicate the methodology at ages 5 and 10 years. We will first invite participants to complete respiratory and dietary questionnaires, we will then invite the young people to attend the hospital for a clinical assessment which will include breathing and allergy testing and providing a sample of blood.
