Research summary
This study will compare the incidence of adverse health outcomes between patients given fibre-free enteral feed and patient's given fibre-containing enteral feeds during the initial period of critical illness. This will use data from patients admitted to the intensive care unit and given these feeds based upon standard feeding protocols over the past 10-15 years. The adverse health effects to be recorded include gastrointestinal conditions, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and mortality in addition to measuring length of stay in intensive care.
