  • Data collection arrangements

The Rona MacKie Melanoma Collection Research Database will be the electronic database for the archival research project “A search for melanoma susceptibility genes in patients with primary cutaneous malignant melanoma”. The original project, which was established over twenty years ago, recruited two arms of participants; a family cohort of 72 families who had a strong family history of melanoma and a sporadic melanoma cohort of 565 individuals, to investigate the genes associated with melanoma with the development of melanoma in the Scottish population. Two electronic databases will be created from the paper records associated with the archival project. Database 1 will contain patient-identifiable information to allow the pseudonymisation of the samples associated with the project and the potential follow-up of participants' outcomes through the cancer registries. The database 2 will function as a research database and contain the following information: study number, age at sample, melanoma diagnosis information (melanoma type, stage of melanoma at diagnosis), relationship to proband (sub-study only), naevi information (sub-study only), Information on any other types of cancer in the family (sub-study only), mutation status. This database is expected to be expanded to include NGS data (whole exome sequencing) once the anonymised DNA samples are released.

  • Research programme

The research team believe that as techniques to understand genetic variation have advanced considerably since the original study, this historical collection can be further utilised using current technologies such as NGS to investigate the genetic causes of melanoma. This will benefit not only melanoma research but as some melanoma risk genes are tumour predisposition genes, research will advance understanding in other areas of cancer research.
