Research summary
A recent self-management educational intervention, known as C2Hear, uses a series of re-useable learning objects (RLOs), each a multi-media clip targeting an element of practical or psychosocial consequence of hearing aid(s).
This study aims to evaluate the role of these RLOs for hearing aid self-management education on self-efficacy, readiness for hearing intervention and hearing aid knowledge in a group of first time hearing aid users. A pseudo-randomised quantitative repeated measures design will be used to compare these RLOs to current standard education (educational booklet) at a single NHS site (Nottingham Audiology Services).
There are two parts to the study:
1. Immediately post Direct Referral;
Consented participants will complete self-report questionnaires on self-efficacy for hearing aids & readiness for hearing intervention (Hearing Health Care Intervention Readiness questionnaire), two visual-analogue scales on readiness and self-efficacy for hearing aid(s) (IDA Institute Motivational Lines) and a cognitive tool (Montreal Cognitive Assessment questionnaire). Participants will randomly receive a pre-numbered opaque envelope containing either the interventional RLOs or standard educational booklet with instructions delivered by student audiologist and in written form regarding advised use. A self-report journal is also given to document use.2. Immediately pre-hearing aid fitting (approx. 4-6 weeks’ post visit 1)
Participants seen immediately prior to hearing aid fitting to repeat questionnaires on self-efficacy for hearing aids & readiness for hearing intervention, two visual-analogue scales on readiness and self-efficacy for hearing aid(s)(HHCIR; IDA Institute Motivational Lines) and two questionnaires on hearing aid self-efficacy (Measure of Audiologic Rehabilitation Self-efficacy) and Hearing And Communication Knowledge questionnaire. Participants will indicate self-report internet skills, method of accessing the RLOs (DVD via TV/ computer or internet; intervention group only) and indicate any independent access of C2Hear (control group only; as C2Hear now freely accessible online). Self-report journals returned. Participants offered alternative education type. Study ends.REC name
