  • Research summary

A number of schools will be invited & recruited to this research. The SENDCo of each consenting school will be asked to note the numbers and sex of all students in years 8, 9 & 10 and also the number of students with a diagnosis of Autism, Selective Mutism, or both in years 8, 9 & 10.These statistics will be sent anonymously to the research team.

After this, both the SENDCo & teachers will be asked to watch a training video on the presentation of Selective Mutism. The SENDCo will be asked to send an information sheet to all parents/carers of children in years 8, 9 & 10 who have a diagnosis of Autism, Selective Mutism or whom are identified by the teachers as possibly having Selective Mutism traits.

Parents/carers of all identified young people will be asked to opt in to this study. Once they have contacted the research team to opt in, they will be sent via post/ email a consent form for themselves, an information sheet for the young person in their care and a consent form for said young person. They will be asked to complete this paper work and return this to the research team.

Once consent has been received from both parent/carer and young person then the SENDCo/teacher will be asked to administer the School Speech Questionnaire to study participants. The first questionnaire will be followed up with the revised Selective Mutism Questionnaire, completed by parents/carers.
