  • Research summary

Background: There have been few studies that have looked at the impact of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) on children and their families. Issues such as fatigue, difficulties with concentration and behaviour have been reported and may be important factors to take into account in decisions about treatment. Cognitive appraisals may impact on adjustment to a chronic illness as suggested by Wallander and Varni (1998) but this has not been looked at in individuals with ITP.
Objectives: This study aims to understand the secondary characteristics of ITP in children and how these impact on the child’s emotional well-being. This study will also aim to start to address the gap in the literature with regard to cognitive appraisals for this group.
Methods: Parents and children will be recruited from NHS hospitals between August 2014 and February 2015. Families will be eligible if children with ITP are between 4 and 16 years of age. Parents and children will be asked to complete questionnaires on behavioural and emotional difficulties, fatigue, and health related quality of life (HRQoL). Parent reports on children will form the main analyses, with child report scores used if response rate permits. Further exploratory analysis will look at predictor variables to emotional well-being and health related quality of life.
