  • Research summary

Research suggests that yoga can be beneficial in the treatment of mental health, including trauma and that there is a growing acceptance and demand for yoga in the NHS through their website, social prescribing and as part of service offerings. The benefits of yoga such as emotion regulation and mind-body connection may be helpful in the treatment of trauma and fit in with International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies recommendations.
This research will provide mental health practitioners with an understanding of the process that might take place when an individual practices yoga alongside psychological therapy, what benefits this may provide as well as any negative consequences that yoga may have. This information will also be helpful to service users who may undertake these two therapies. Additionally, it will allow for the development and implementation of this intervention in an effective and evidence-based way and finally it can help guide the direction for future research.
There will be two phases of this research. In the first phase, participants in the yoga group will complete diary entries while part of the yoga group. These will then be analysed and will lead to the development of interview questions which will be used in the second phase of the study in which further participants will be recruited. All participants will be 18 or over. As required by the service, they will all have individual therapy alongside the yoga group. Before taking part, it will be ensured that taking part in the study would not be too distressing for the participants. Once all data has been collected it will be analysed using grounded theory and developed into a model.
