Research summary
A recent review of the evidence for specialist treatment for people with an acquired brain injury in secure psychiatric services identified a lack of research in this area. They stated that research is needed to inform evidence based decisions on the appropriate setting for the care of people with brain injury and challenging behaviour.
TBI and offending behaviour are closely linked. Research has shown people with a TBI are more likely to offend and that offenders are more likely to have suffered a TBI. Studies into the prevalence of TBI in prison settings have recently been completed (Men, Women, Juveniles). To date, no study of the prevalence of TBI in secure mental health settings (male or female) has been completed.
This study seeks to replicate and extend the current body of research into the prevalence of TBI in secure settings to secure mental health hospitals. By doing so, it seeks to demonstrate the extent of TBI in secure mental health services, potentially identifying previously unmet needs in this population. Furthermore, by including a female secure service in this study, it will seek to identify the needs for this service user group also.
