  • Research summary

This research study aims to assess the impact of music therapy on patient anxiety levels when undergoing a general anaesthetic. To achieve this, we will invite patients to participate in the study at least four weeks before the date of surgery and they will be randomly allocated into one of two cohorts: control or intervention. Participants will be blinded to their allocation. The intervention group will be exposed to pre-selected calming music on arrival to the anaesthetic room meanwhile the control group will be exposed to no music. We will measure self-reported patient anxiety scores using a validated anxiety questionnaire and data focused on patient experience at key points along the perioperative journey from: arrival to hospital, to time of general anaesthetic and then in the recovery unit post-operatively. Together, this information will illustrate if patient anxiety levels heighten close to surgery and whether music therapy prior to general anaesthetic improves patient anxiety levels compared to those who have not been exposed to it.
