Research summary
The aim of this study is to evaluate whether airway clearance physiotherapy immediately before exercise improves exercise performance as measured by Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)in children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The aim is to recruit 50 children over 10 years old from a convenience sample of those children with CF attending the Royal Hospital for Sick Children Edinburgh CF Clinic. Subjects will be randomised to either a sequence of airway clearance therapy (ACT) or no ACT immediately prior to exercise test 1 and the opposite sequence will be undertaken prior test 2. The results of the exercise tests (with or without prior physiotherapy) will be compared.
