  • Research summary

Cancer associated thrombosis (CAT) is now recognised as a separate disease that should be managed differently to venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients without cancer. Whilst the management of CAT is clearly well known, the effect of CAT on the patient’s quality of life (QoL) is yet to be properly measured. The aim of the study is to evaluate the experiences of patients with CAT in order to have an understanding of the impact of CAT and to find ways to improve their QoL.

The best method for understanding patients’ experiences of illness from their perspective, is to interview patients themselves. Patients will be recruited from the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport and Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff.

Interviews will be held with about 20 patients. Interviews will consist of two parts:

    1. The “semi-structured interview” - Interviews using pre-planned questions to explore the effect that CAT has on patients’ QoL.

    2. The “cognitive interview” - Interviews asking patients to assess QoL questionnaires which are used with patients who have chronic venous disease (CVD). The researcher will discuss these questionnaires with the patients to see how easily understandable they are for patients who not only have CVD but have cancer too. The patient will be required to discuss either one or two of these QoL questionnaires depending on whether they have experienced a deep vein thrombosis, a pulmonary embolism or both.

The interview will last 60 minutes, and will be audio-recorded and typed out word for word. The researcher will thoroughly examine the transcripts of the first part of the interview for re-occurring themes. For the second part of the interview, the researcher will take note of any problems that the patient has had in understanding the questionnaires and also will record any additional comments that the patient has about the suitability of the questionnaires for patients with cancer.
