Research summary
The aim of this research is to try and understand what may cause idiopathic sensory ganglionopathy (SG).
SG is an uncommon disease that can lead to various degrees of disability and is commonly seen as occurring due to another disease. Most have an unknown cause and progress slowly and irreversibly even with treatment.
By analysing samples from patients seen at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery as part of their treatment, we will try and find the cause of idiopathic sensory ganglionopathy. Previous work suggests it may be an immune system disorder leading to nerve problems.
Inclusion criteria: All patients must have been clinically defined as having SG without any known cause.
Control patients will be age matched and in three groups. One group will be normal, the second group will be patients with motor neuropathy and a third group of patients will be other neuropathies.
Protein studies will be used to help the investigations into these patients to identify any proteins involved in the disease.
These proteins will be examined further by mass spectrometry (MS). Other experiments will help us define more accurately possible causes of idiopathic sensory ganglionopathy.
