Data collection arrangements
The Oxford Brain Bank (OBB) is hosted in the Department of Neuropathology of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Academic Unit of Neuropathology of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences of Oxford University. Storage facilities exist in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital, OX3 9DU. There is currently no off-site storage. The OBB stores samples and data relevant for research into neurological diseases. Samples comprise biopsies or biofluids mostly obtained during routine healthcare, and organs, tissue samples and biofluids donated after death. The OBB is part of the Oxford BioResource and overseen by a management, access and steering committee. A tissue coordinator team and specialist nurses manage sample collection with the local clinical teams. Consent is sought as part of routine healthcare provision, complemented by disease-specific initiatives.
Research programme
The Oxford Brain Bank is a local, national and international resource for samples and data for clinical and basic neuroscience research. The bank supports research programmes into nervous system development, normal ageing and dementia, motor neuron disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and autism. It also supports work on brain tumours, muscle and nerve disorders. Additionally, the Oxford Brain Bank's historical archive comprises cases of many rare diseases, as well as large cohorts of neurodegenerative diseases, infective diseases, trauma and cerebrovascular diseases.
